A World History of Art in 50 Works: Central & South America
Shamelessly ‘borrowing’ the idea from Neil MacGregor’s ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects’ from the British Museum, Community Classroom presents the fifth series in ‘A World History of Art in 50 Works.’ Divided into regions, this 5 week course will move on from the fourth series’ focus on England to look at 5 key works of art from Central & South America. In this series we travel to Central and South America, focusing particularly on Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. We will delve into the mysteries of Mayan culture and ritual sacrifice, the Christianisation of the Americas under the conquistadors and how national and gender identity combine to create seminal artworks by icons of feminist art history.

No prior knowledge is required, just a passion for art and history!

 

This course is led by Mrs Katie Lintott-Gillman, Head of History of Art at Surbiton High School. She studied at Warwick University; the Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, Venice; and the Courtauld Institute. Her particular interests include the Venetian Renaissance & the Spanish Golden Age; she also has an obsession with Masterchef.

Week 3: Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, Dominican Republic, (1504-50)
Week 4: Frida Kahlo, Self Portrait along the Border Between Mexico and the USA (1932)
Week 5: Doris Salcedo, Tabula Rasa Series (2018-20)
