Top tips from a former head girl: Interview with Britt Borkan

From Surbiton to The Voice
Britt Borkan was the head girl for Surbiton High between 2012 and 2013. She studied Film and Televison production at The University of York before graduating in 2016. Britt is currently working as a core runner (helping the smooth running of the production) for The Voice UK, a job which has taken her travelling across the country on the Producer Auditions Tour. Here she shares her experience at Surbiton and her advice for current pupils.

What three tips would you give to current pupils?

"I would definitely say working together as friends is an incredibly valuable skill to have.  I'd also recommend keeping in contact with friends from school. I've made many long lasting friendships through Surbiton, and it has been amazing to watch my friends progress in careers from ideas they had earlier down in the school."

In what way would you say that your time at Surbiton has prepared you for what you are doing now?

"I think one of the most valuable things the school has taught me is resilience. Having a  go getting attitude is really important in film and television production. When I first came to the school I was quite shy but over the years I became more confident and was encouraged to have more of a voice. This sort of approach is really essential in my job now, I have to take the initiative and be proactive."

Most valuable experience at the school?

"For me personally, Sixth Form was the most valuable experience at the school. It was great seeing people come into their own and start to work out what they wanted to do."
