Surbiton High School Values Creative Response

Since the start of this academic year, as a community, we have undertaken a series of activities to help establish our new Surbiton High School values.

On the first day of School in September, all pupils in the Senior School engaged in a session with their Form Tutor to discuss their personal values, what is important to them, and what we should strive to hold as our community values. This session replicated a staff workshop which had taken place in the preceding week.

We spent time resetting and re-evaluating our expectations of each other, discussed our own personal values, and listened to all members of our community to ensure we continue to meet the needs of everyone and embrace difference, in whatever form that might take.

Further to this, we held similar workshops with interested parents in our community to also engage in the process of establishing our new Surbiton High School values; thank you to those who took part.

Staff and pupil ‘working groups’ were formed, focusing on the refinement of all the feedback received. We are now excited to share our whole school values for us all to embrace and live by:

We are compassionate

We are kind and we care, in thought and in action. We consider those less fortunate and strive to support. We are mindful of the gentle power of positive actions.

We are respectful

We respect all people equally. We respect ourselves, our learning, our environment, and the planet we all share. We strive to act respectfully in all our interactions. When we disagree, we do so respectfully.

We are courageous

When challenged by our fears we are determined, not deterred. We call on resilience for strength in the teeth of the struggle. We bravely chase our dreams and fight for what we believe.

We are inquisitive

We understand that a thoughtful question is the key to unlock understanding. We believe where answers provide ends, questions pose exciting beginnings. We are eager to explore, we question to discover, we are curious to learn more of the world at large.

We are a community

We value belonging to a wider community: our school community, our local community, our global community. We are inclusive of all no matter our differences. We value and nurture the connections we make.

The engagement across the community has been and continues to be fantastic, the enthusiasm shown is motivational and uplifting, and we thank everyone for their contributions.

The next stage is for us to embed these values within the community to ensure we live by them every day. To achieve this, there are many actions that we will be taking over the coming months. One exciting and immediate action is to invite every member of our community to take part in a creative competition:

Surbiton High School Values Creative Response Competition Surbiton Values.pdf

We would love for you (pupils, parents, and staff) to produce your best creative response to one, two or even all of our new Surbiton High School Values.

The competition will run throughout the summer term with the deadline for submissions on Friday 17 June. Submissions will be displayed in an exhibition and celebration event before the end of the year and prizes will be handed out to those who have created the most engaging and reflective creative response to our Surbiton High School Values.

Some examples might include:

  • Fine art, a drawing or painting
  • Sculpture
  • Dance
  • Drama script or a piece of music
  • Stop motion
  • Textiles
  • A graphic design
  • Photography
  • Poem or a short story
  • Coding a robot to do a dance!

The competition is completely optional, but we ask that you please encourage your daughter to take part. Staff and parents are also invited to enter the competition. Whilst we have some great prizes lined up, we would also welcome any donations suitable for individuals from four years old upwards. If you wish to donate any prizes/experiences for the winners, please could you contact cheryl.wiseman@surbitonhigh.com with details.
