It’s a wrap! The senior school’s recent production of The Addams Family was a spine-tingling success, filled with laughter, gothic charm, and the kind of quirky humour that only this beloved family could provide. The musical, based on the iconic cartoon created by Charles Addams and later adapted into a stage show, brought together pupils from the Prep School to the Sixth Form and many staff for 4 macabre and heartwarming performances at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
With its dark humour and eccentric characters, the central focus of the musical is the family itself—Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma, and the disembodied hand, Thing. At the heart of the story is Wednesday’s coming-of-age journey. In this version, she has fallen in love with a "normal" young man named Lucas, which throws the typically dark and dysfunctional Addams clan into disarray. As is typical with the Addams family, their quirky way of seeing the world collides with the expectations of others, creating comedic situations that explore the clash between tradition and change. The pupils all excelled in capturing the essence and accents of these beloved characters.
As the biggest event in the school calendar, it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the best of Surbiton High School. For our former pupils, the evening was not only an opportunity to enjoy the show but also a chance to reconnect with old friends and relive the magic of school productions. During the interval, the Green & Silver Club hosted a special drinks reception for the 48 alumni in attendance, providing the perfect setting for socializing and reminiscing. Former pupils, many of whom were cast members in previous school productions shared stories and laughter, comparing notes on how much the school and its drama programme have evolved over the years. Several former pupils shared how meaningful it was to see the next generation of performers take to the stage and how this Department continues to be an integral part of the school’s culture.
