Anne Darlow
1935-2026

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Anne Darlow, former Deputy Head of Surbiton High School, who died on 6 May 2026, aged 91.

Anne worked initially at Putney High School from 1957-60 and then took time off with the birth of her sons, Simon 1961, Thomas 1963, and Ben 1965. She returned to work at Surbiton High School from 1971 to 1981 where she rose to become Deputy Head. She was then appointed Headmistress of Sir William Perkins School Chertsey, where she worked from 1982 until her retirement in 1994. After retirement, she spent an active life looking after grandchildren and travelling.

Those who worked with and were taught by Anne remember her not only for her achievements, but for her character. She combined intellectual rigour with warmth and kindness and was deeply committed to the wellbeing and potential of every student. She took care to know each student as individuals, encouraging each to develop confidence, curiosity, and a sense of purpose. Colleagues recall her as a thoughtful and principled leader, with a strong sense of service and an ability to inspire both staff and students.

She will be remembered with great affection, respect, and gratitude by all who knew her.
